About the Journal
ABOUT THE JOURNAL
Materia Arquitectura is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access academic journal published biannually by the School of Architecture at Universidad San Sebastián, Chile. Its mission is to foster critical and experimental research in architecture and related disciplines, understood not only as a design practice but as a cultural, social, political, and technical field in continuous transformation.
The journal publishes original research articles, visual essays, interviews, and reviews that contribute to rethinking the foundations, discourses, and methods of contemporary architecture. Its editorial approach is focused on raising new questions and perspectives regarding architectural theory and practice, urban design, landscape, heritage, spatial technologies, visual culture, and design pedagogy, among other topics.
Each issue of Materia Arquitectura is organized around a thematic focus proposed by guest editors, who curate contributions that connect architecture with fields such as art, philosophy, literature, cinema, geography, history, anthropology, and the social sciences. In doing so, the journal seeks to expand the boundaries of architectural thought and promote interdisciplinary dialogue that is informed, rigorous, and forward-thinking.
Unlike other journals focused solely on architectural production, Materia Arquitectura promotes a critical, situated, and experimental approach to the discipline, publishing research from Latin America and beyond. Based in Chile, the journal seeks to amplify voices from the Global South, contributing to the diversification of architectural epistemologies and enriching international debates from alternative vantage points.
All submissions undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process. The journal welcomes contributions from researchers, educators, professionals, and students in architecture and related fields who are actively engaged in the critical production of disciplinary knowledge.
