Abstract
Reusing the old façade of the former building of El Mercurio as a shopping and office centre shows an example of patrimonial recovery done by the private world, which is in contrast with the rigidity of the public sector to achieve the same goal. Its appearance in the space of the also renovated Montt-Varas square, together with the Palace Courts and the buildings of the former Congress and the Museo Precolombino, consolidates a space of protected and highly harmonious surroundings.
