Abstract
Alejando Echeverri analiza la transformación de varias ciudades latinoamericanas, especialmente Medellín, y la interdependencia entre la planificación territorial y los procesos políticos. Asimismo, explica los fundamentos sociales que impulsaron la espectacular transformación de Medellín en la década pasada, entrega detalles sobre la gestión que la hizo posible y hace un balance crítico de su repercusión en otras ciudades de la región.
Echeverri describe el fenómeno de las segundas ciudades y destaca el caso de Rosario (Argentina). Analiza el desafío que enfrentan las ciudades brasileras para responder al crecimiento de la clase media. Expone los fundamentos básicos del “urbanismo social”, descartando que el fin último sean las transformaciones físicas y aclarando que el objetivo de este urbanismo es ofrecer programas que integren a la población al desarrollo de la ciudad.
Finalmente, explica cómo Medellín supo sacar provecho de sus condiciones geográficas.
