Abstract

Este articulo explora algunas de las maneras en que la arquitectura moderna se involucro en la construccion de un imaginario racial en Chile durante el gobierno de Pedro Aguirre Cerda, entre 1938 y 1941. Se intenta recons- truir el concepto de “raza” utilizado por el programa de Estado de Pedro Aguirre Cerda “La defensa de la raza y aprovechamiento de las horas libres”, y por Jorge Aguirre Silva, el arquitecto a cargo. Situando al discurso arquitectonico junto a los de la ciencia medica, la educacion fisica y la eugenesia en el desarrollo del programa de Pedro Aguirre Cerda, se intenta mostrar como su arquitectura fue influenciada no solo por el modernismo europeo, sino tambien por una version local de higienismo y eugenesia, asi como por una forma de naciona- lismo basado en la produccion y proteccion de una raza homogenea
