154 DAYS IN SANTIAGO’S ‘GROUND ZERO’: APPROACHES TO THE CENTER OF THE SOCIAL OUTBURST

Main Article Content

Abstract

Chile’s social outburst of October 2019 transformed Santiago with expressions of the citizens that had as epicenter Baquedano Square, rebaptized by the people as 'Plaza de la Dignidad' (Dignity Square). Early on, the square and its surroundings were referred to as 'ground zero' by the national press, a place that hosted mass demonstrations and served as a support for interventions that turned the capital into an urban canvas. What is ground zero in Santiago and how is it constituted? What sector of the city are we referring to when we mention this term? This essay addresses the spatial implications of the social outburst and its graphic representation.
