Abstract
Challenging Western hegemonic notions of originality and intellectual property, the Chinese industry has developed a form of imitation that is paradoxically original: shanzhai. Integrating philosophical ideas with my experience as a Latin American architect in Beijing, this article explores some cultural, historical, and commercial dimensions of “copy and paste” art and architecture in China, from copycat cities to Disneyland parks. Ultimately, this trend goes beyond counterfeiting and industrial espionage, as it responds to a deep-rooted pragmatism and cultural values that will continue to shape a global economy where China has reemerged as a superpower.
