Abstract
Justin McGuirk analiza las causas del interés mundial por el urbanismo latinoamericano y detalla los motivos que lo llevaron a investigar un nuevo tipo de arquitectura, la “arquitectura activista”. Destaca la dimensión social del trabajo de profesionales como Alejandro Aravena, Urban Think Tank, Jorge Mario Jáuregui y Teddy Cruz, y se detiene en los referentes históricos que sustentan dicha dimensión: el trabajo de John Turner en las barriadas peruanas, el experimento de viviendas PREVI en Lima y la actividad de Vilanova Artigas, Sergio Ferro y Carlos Nelson en Brasil.
McGuirk valora la creación de infraestructuras urbanas que no se rigen por las reglas del capitalismo y destaca el trabajo del Movimiento Social Tupac Amaru en el noroeste de Argentina. Resalta que Latinoamérica descubrió una dignidad política que el mundo desarrollado ha perdido. A través de ejemplos como el mejoramiento de Paraisópolis y la introducción de sistemas alternativos de transporte en ciudades como Caracas, Medellín y Río de Janeiro, asegura que Latinoamérica está entregando lecciones al resto del mundo.
